Airport Hotel or Downtown?

San Francisco is close to its airport — BART reaches downtown in about 30 minutes for $11.80. For most trips that makes a downtown hotel the better base, and an airport hotel an answer to a timing problem. The timing problems are specific, and most of them come from BART's hours.

BART times from the official schedule for Powell St, September 2026; they change each mid-August and mid-January. Full detail on getting from San Francisco to SFO. The flight-time cutoffs are our judgement, allowing roughly 30 minutes on BART and about 90 minutes at the airport for a domestic flight — add more for international.

A taxi changes the arithmetic. SFMTA's official estimate for a metered taxi between downtown and SFO is about $56, plus a $6 pick-up fee when starting at the airport, before tolls and tip. For one early flight, that is often cheaper than an extra night at an airport hotel — and the 24-hour SamTrans bus is cheaper still. Every option to SFO compared →

Grand Hyatt at SFO

The only hotel on SFO property, at the airport entrance, and the only one you reach without a shuttle. It has its own AirTrain stop: both the Red Line, which loops the terminals in about nine minutes, and the Blue Line call there. AirTrain is free and runs 24 hours a day, with trains as often as every four minutes.

What SFO says about it

351 soundproofed rooms including 22 suites, with views over the bay and the airfield, plus a 24-hour grab-and-go food outlet and in-room dining. Reachable from every terminal by AirTrain or by road.

The Grand Hyatt is the missed-connection hotel. Because you never leave the AirTrain system, you can be back at a terminal within minutes at any hour. That matters most for a very early departure or a rebooked connection; for a relaxed afternoon flight, a shuttle hotel or a downtown room does the same job.

Hotels With SFO Shuttles

SFO publishes a list of hotels that run free courtesy shuttles to and from the terminals. They sit in four towns just south and north of the airport. The shuttles go to the hotel and nowhere else — not downtown, and not to other parts of the Bay Area.

Confirm the shuttle when you book, and ask about hours. SFO's own advice is to check shuttle availability with the hotel directly. A free shuttle that stops at 11 pm is no help on a 1 am arrival, and a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes needs to be in your departure-morning timing.

Why Millbrae Is Different

Millbrae is the town with the Millbrae station, where BART meets Caltrain. BART between SFO and Millbrae costs $5.85, and from Millbrae Caltrain runs down the Peninsula to Palo Alto, Mountain View, and San Jose. If your trip mixes the city and Silicon Valley, a hotel in Millbrae keeps both within one train ride — which none of the other shuttle towns can say as simply.

Both Millbrae hotels on SFO's list also run airport shuttles, so you have a choice between the shuttle and the one-stop BART ride.

Common Questions

Is there a hotel inside SFO?
Yes — the Grand Hyatt at SFO, at the airport entrance, is the only hotel on airport property. It has its own stop on the free AirTrain, served by both the Red Line and the Blue Line, so you reach it from any terminal without a shuttle, at any hour.
Which hotels near SFO have a free airport shuttle?
SFO lists 30 hotels with free courtesy shuttles, in Burlingame (11), South San Francisco (10), San Bruno (7), and Millbrae (2). They include Hilton, Hyatt Regency, Marriott, Embassy Suites, Doubletree, Westin, and Aloft properties. The list is updated by SFO — confirm the shuttle and its hours with the hotel when you book.
Where do hotel shuttles pick up at SFO?
At Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3, hotel shuttles use the center island on the Departures/Ticketing Level roadway. At the International Terminal they use the center island on the Arrivals Level roadway.
Do SFO hotel shuttles go to downtown San Francisco?
No. SFO says the courtesy shuttles only go to the hotels that run them — not to San Francisco or elsewhere in the Bay Area. To get downtown, take BART ($11.80, about 30 minutes), a taxi, or a rideshare. Every way out of SFO →
Should I stay near SFO for an early flight?
It depends on the day. BART's first SFO-bound train from Powell St leaves around 5:31 a.m. on weekdays, 6:23 a.m. on Saturdays, and 8:23 a.m. on Sundays, so early weekend flights are the real problem. A taxi is roughly $56 from downtown, which for one early departure is often cheaper than an extra hotel night. Getting to SFO →
How do I get from the SFO terminals to the Grand Hyatt?
Take AirTrain, which is free and runs 24 hours a day. Both the Red Line — a loop of about nine minutes around the terminals — and the Blue Line stop at Grand Hyatt at SFO. From BART, ride AirTrain from the Garage G / BART Station stop.
Is Millbrae a good place to stay near SFO?
If your trip includes the Peninsula or Silicon Valley, yes. Millbrae station is where BART meets Caltrain: BART to SFO costs $5.85, and Caltrain runs south to Palo Alto, Mountain View, and San Jose. Two Millbrae hotels on SFO's list also run airport shuttles. Caltrain guide →
